Rally to Urge Candidates to Pledge to Fight Corporate Corruption of Washington

Participants to urge Rep. Lungren and Rep. Candidate Bera to fight corporate control of government, sign Fight Washington Corruption Pledge

On Tuesday, August 10th at noon, MoveOn members in San Andreas will gather outside of the Government Center to join the fight against corporate corruption in Washington by supporting the Fight Washington Corruption Pledge. The pledge, which was developed from ideas submitted by tens of thousands of Americans and endorsed by 96 percent of MoveOn.org members, is part of MoveOn.org’s campaign to make government work for the 98 percent of people who aren’t represented by corporate lobbyists.

Locally, corporate corruption at the national level is affecting our local beef and farm producers. It's important to keep our farmers in business, and its time we got serious about creating a market that is transparent and fair. Likewise in the construction industry with our local construction contractors. Recently, bids for government projects were awarded to companies outside our county borders. We want to send a message calling for a return to fairness and common sense to support our local economy.

The Fight Washington Corruption Pledge calls for overturning the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling giving corporations the right to buy elections, passing the Fair Elections Now Act to empower grassroots-fueled candidates, and radically eroding corporate lobbyists’ influence. From now through the elections, MoveOn members around the country will be asking elected officials to stand with them and help stop corporate control of Washington by supporting the pledge.

“From BP to Wall Street bailouts, the news frustrates and angers voters like me, but it’s important we recognize that these crises aren’t caused by just a few out-of-control corporations. The real problem is corporate control of Washington,” said Mary Boblet, rally host. We will make requests to Congressional Rep. candidates Lungren and Bera and our local candidates for Supervisor, Russ Thomas and Darren Spellman. “It’s time for these politicians to answer this question; will they do the bidding of corporations and their lobbyists or sign the Fight Washington Corruption Pledge and stand with us to make government work again?”
